The HP Officejet H470 can be a boon to those who move around with laptops and need to print documents wherever they are without worrying about cables, plugs and drivers. Features: Small but not very compact, this printer is sleek and presentable. It weighs around 2 kg, around the weight of today’s mainstream laptops. It can even print documents when you have no power sockets at your disposal. Yes, this printer has a built in battery pack, eliminating the need to carry around the power adapter. Priced at Rs 13,899, the gadget might seem very expensive compared a regular color inkjet printer, but you can also use it to print from any handheld device, cellphone or computer which supports wireless networking and/or Bluetooth. The H470 comes in three variants. The one we tested comes without Bluetooth or wireless support, but you can use a Bluetooth adapter (sold separately). The H470B and H470WB support Bluetooth and Wireless + Bluetooth respectively. The device has a dual tone black and silver body, includes a PictBridge port, one USB port for a Bluetooth dongle and a media card slot for SD and MMC cards. Performance: The printer driver offers something called RLT (Real Life Technologies) that supposedly helps printed images look more lifelike. But when we printed some test sheets, we found nothing new or impressive. HP should have concentrated more on the performance rather than the looks of the printer. The print speeds were barely acceptable (see table below). Fast draft mode produced good prints, but the speed of 13 pages per minute resulted in spoilt sheets with jagged lines in almost every document we printed. Printing in the Normal and Best modes was very slow, but with good reproduction that looked like a laser printed document. However, the ink takes a little time to dry and there is no paper handling tray, which can lead to smudged and dirty prints. So be ready to lift each page carefully when it is ejected by the printer. Verdict: The printer is a good companion for an executive or a marketing professional who needs to print documents through the day but isn’t always at a desk or office. Though it is a little bulky and heavy to carry around with your laptop bag, it does a fairly decent print job in case of an emergency. For: Mobility, looks, can be used with batteries, wireless and Bluetooth options. Against: Slow printing in better modes, smudgy prints when handled carelessly. | Scores | | Mode | Fast Draft | Fast Normal | Normal | Best
